Colours, logo and sole on these cards: where the maker does not state them, we looked at the maker’s own product photos and chose one of our written visual categories.

A closer look

Chinos and khakis: one pair of trousers

Reviewers use both words. Read them as the same trousers, then compare fit and how each pair wears.

Cotton twill
Khaki colour
Trousers, not shorts
Three facts about the trousers; no outfit rule or dress code is implied.
The cloth
Chino is a cotton twill, first made for military uniforms in the 19th century and later worn as everyday trousers.
The colour
Khaki is a colour, from a Hindustani word for soil-coloured. Many people say khakis for chino trousers of any shade.
What we count
This list reads both words as trousers. Chino shorts and a khaki-coloured shoe are not counted.
Sources & scope
  • Science backgroundWikipedia · Chino cloth ↗ · Checked

Chino is a twill fabric, originally pure cotton, developed in the mid-19th century for British military uniforms; in the US the trousers spread after veterans of the Spanish–American War brought them home.

A general reference on the fabric and its history. It says nothing about any sneaker or about how a pair should be worn.

  • Science backgroundWikipedia · Khaki ↗ · Checked

Khaki is a loanword from Hindustani meaning soil-coloured; trousers in that colour are often called khakis, and the word is sometimes used for chinos of any colour.

A general reference whose usage note on «khakis» carries no citation. It does not describe these sneakers.

An editorial reading guide to this collection, not a laboratory test, dress code or prediction for every wearer.

A good point. A caveat.

A pair can work well in one respect and divide opinion in another. Here are separate wearer observations about the same named version.

How they change with wear

What happens to the appearance and condition of a pair? These are separate observations of the named version, not a forecast of its lifespan.

Why our picks are different for men 35+

A man 35+ who wears chinos wants a sneaker that already works with them, not a theory of style. Whether a shoe looks right is a matter of taste, so this list does not judge it from photographs, materials or logos. It names the pairs that at least two different people who wore them say go with chinos, in full reviews, where nobody we read says otherwise. A maker's description or a shop's copy does not count. One person is not enough here: going with chinos is an opinion about looks, not a fact of wear, and two independent voices make it a pattern. A pair missing from the list may simply not have been reviewed that way yet; that is our gap, not a verdict on the shoe.

Our editorial judgement.

Before you buy

Answered from what we hold
What sneakers go with chinos?

The pairs on this list: each has at least two people who wear it and say it goes with chinos, and none who say otherwise. Compare fit and how each pair holds up before choosing.

Why do you need two people?

Because going with chinos is an opinion about how a pair looks. One person's view is one taste; two people saying the same thing independently is a pattern.

Do these pairs work with a suit or dress trousers?

This list answers chinos only. A pair that goes with chinos may or may not suit tailoring; we have not read reviews for that.

Why is a sneaker I wear with chinos missing?

Either we have not yet read two reviews that say it, or the people we read disagree. A missing pair is our gap, not a verdict.

Do the fit reports tell me which size to buy?

They describe general fit reported by other wearers. They do not establish which size will fit your foot; the model page keeps the underlying reports and any disagreement.

Are the prices current shopping offers?

These are prices from the recorded manufacturer pages, for the recorded versions. They are not live offers. “Where to buy” beside a price searches Google for current options.

How we choose these pairs

One fact, confirmed by agreeing independent reviews, decides who is on this list.

Highest overall review score first. On equal scores, more reviewing authors first, then maker and model; pairs without a score follow alphabetically. An order to browse — no pair here has a place.

An independent guide from Gentlesneaker.

We bring together owner feedback, reviews and maker details to explain what each pair offers. Review and sizing summaries cover the model; detailed observations keep their named versions and conditions. Individual experiences are not a promise for every wearer.
