Colours, logo and sole on these cards: where the maker does not state them, we looked at the maker’s own product photos and chose one of our written visual categories.

A good point. A caveat.

A pair can work well in one respect and divide opinion in another. Here are separate wearer observations about the same named version.

What happens to the appearance and condition of a pair? These are separate observations of the named version, not a forecast of its lifespan.

Why our picks are different for men over 40

Suede is the softer half of a grown-up sneaker wardrobe: it looks warmer than smooth leather, dresses down a jacket and dresses up jeans, and a man over 40 who owns good shoes usually owns something in suede already. It also marks in the rain and asks for a brush, which is part of the choice. This list takes the maker at its word, from its own page and for the version named: suede in the upper puts a model here, even when the upper also has leather or textile panels. It does not grade the suede or say how it takes water; those are questions for the ranked version. A shoe whose maker page we have not read for its material stays off the list, which is our gap.

Our editorial judgement.

Before you buy

Answered from what we hold
Does nubuck count as suede here?

No. Makers list nubuck as a material of its own, and a nubuck upper is on this list only if the maker also lists suede.

Is suede a problem in the rain?

It can mark. This list does not rule on that; what wearers report about wet weather is on each shoe's page once we have read enough reviews.

Why is a suede shoe I know missing?

Because we have not yet read the material off its maker's page, or the maker does not list suede for the version we hold. A shoe we have not read is our gap.

Do the fit reports tell me which size to buy?

They describe general fit reported by other wearers. They do not establish which size will fit your foot; the model page keeps the underlying reports and any disagreement.

Are the prices current shopping offers?

These are prices from the recorded manufacturer pages, for the recorded versions. They are not live offers. Open a pair to see its price date and use its Google link to look for current options.

Do more recommendations mean a better shoe?

The counts show how many of the collected reviews recommend each model. Different models have different numbers of reviews; these counts do not establish a ranking.

How we choose these pairs

One fact, read off the maker’s own page, decides who is on this list.

Highest overall review score first. On equal scores, more reviewing authors first, then maker and model; pairs without a score follow alphabetically. An order to browse — no pair here has a place.

An independent guide from Gentlesneaker.

We bring together owner feedback, reviews and maker details to explain what each pair offers. Review and sizing summaries cover the model; detailed observations keep their named versions and conditions. Individual experiences are not a promise for every wearer.
